Throughout the entire day, the wind has been relentless, carrying with it an undeniable sense of transformation. September, a month of transitions, marks the fading moments of summer and signals the imminent arrival of frost. As I observe the graceful dance of leaves, revealing their underbellies against the backdrop of the azure sky, my muse beckons me forward, urging me to evolve and explore uncharted territories. And so, I have heeded her call. Today, I am thrilled to unveil a fresh, innovative approach to photo editing that I have aptly named “Van Gogh.”

Van Gogh’s Influence
Vincent van Gogh was a brilliant painter known for his unique style. I was inspired by his use of colors and brushstrokes in his painting called Autumn Landscape at Dusk. To bring a similar artistic quality to my photos, I experimented with enhancing colors, adding texture, and creating a dreamy atmosphere. I wanted my images to evoke the same emotions as Van Gogh’s masterpiece.

As I gaze upon this painting, nostalgic memories flood my mind, taking me back to my childhood days perched atop the mountain overlooking my grandmother’s house in Hot Springs, North Carolina. The thrill of hiking to the summit, where a serene bald awaited, filled my heart with joy. I would spend endless hours seated there, surrendering to the whims of the wind as it caressed my hair, while my eyes absorbed the panoramic view of the minuscule town below.
Often, I would time my visits near sunset, captivated by the enchanting spectacle that unfolded before me. The sun, nearing its descent beyond the horizon, would bestow its final, fleeting embers upon the surrounding trees as if sharing a tender farewell to the day.
Exploring Appalachian Landscapes
The Southern Appalachian region has breathtaking landscapes with rolling hills and vibrant nature. During the summer, the lush green leaves on the trees fascinated me. I worked on capturing and enhancing the richness of these landscapes in my photographs. By adjusting colors and making targeted edits, I aimed to convey the beauty and peacefulness of the region.

In lighthearted banter with my loved ones, I often jest about being a tourist in my own homeland. Truth be told, I find immense joy in immersing myself within these time-honored mountains. Whether it’s embarking on a scenic drive along the majestic Blue Ridge Parkway or delving into the uncharted realms of the concealed corners of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, I feel a profound sense of contentment.

This land, intertwined with the fabric of my being, holds a place both within and outside my soul. Its ancient beauty resonates deep within me, beckoning me to explore its hidden treasures and unravel its secrets. As I traverse these hallowed grounds, I embrace the essence of a wanderer, finding solace and fulfillment in the embrace of my homeland’s natural wonders.
Golden Hour Sunsets and My Photo Editing Style

The golden hour, right before sunset, has a special quality of soft and warm light that photographers love. I found myself drawn to this enchanting light and wanted to capture its essence in my photos. By adjusting colors, emphasizing warmth, and adding a touch of golden glow, I tried to recreate the magical atmosphere of the golden hour. These edits made my images evoke a dreamy and ethereal feeling.
Blending Styles and Creating My Look

As I progressed, I realized that true creativity comes from blending different influences. I combined elements from Van Gogh’s style, the vibrant greens of the Appalachian landscapes, and the warmth of golden-hour sunsets to create a fresh photo editing style. This blend became my signature look, making my photos unique and reflecting my own artistic vision. I increased textures and clarity to give a painterly feel and paid attention to colors to create a harmonious and pleasing palette.
Evoking Emotion and Telling Stories
Beyond the technical aspects, I learned the importance of storytelling and emotions in photography. Inspired by Van Gogh, I aimed to convey feelings and create a narrative within my images. I used lighting adjustments, vignettes, and tonal shifts to guide the viewer’s gaze and create a mood. Whether it was the serenity of a sunset or the mystery of a dusk scene, I wanted my photos to evoke emotions and tell a visual story.

In my creative endeavors, I seamlessly blend the narratives of visual art and my ardor for reading, crafting a distinctive essence that sets my work apart from others. I wholeheartedly acknowledge that I tend to romanticize the subjects captured within my images. Yet, isn’t it a common human tendency to imbue the world before us with a touch of enchantment? Each day, we find ourselves succumbing to the allure of our surroundings, idealizing and infusing them with a sense of wonder.

The landscape I portray in my art extends a captivating invitation—a beckoning call to dream and immerse oneself in its enigmatic allure. Its very essence tantalizes the imagination, urging us to embark on an introspective journey, delving into the mysteries it holds. With every shutter click, I seek to evoke that longing for exploration, inviting viewers to join me in unraveling the secrets woven within this captivating terrain.
